I grew up in a time where some women started to question this and assuming hyphenated names. I remember being a teenager thinking "WTF is with these hyphenated names?"
I never really had to confront this issue until I was about to get married. My wife and I had this conversation and I began to understand how truly sinister the name change and loss of identity can be for a woman.
The example you gave about your professional accomplishments having 'his last name' brought this to the sinister level. This is something all women and men should reflect upon. This is something I will discuss with my daughter.
Completely agree that this a stamp of ownership and property transfer.
