IMHO Monogamy is easy, and that's why it's the default. Even in the context of polyamory, I think hierarchal structures do naturally organize if children and assets are in play. Things become inherently more complex with its 2 + 1 or more. If all partners are on board with this complexity then awesome, but I can see how the majority of people go the easy route.
