Thomas Ott, Writer
The man behind the lunacy
Hi! My name is Thomas Ott but you can call me Tom. Dogs love me. I’ve been on Medium since 2015 but actively writing here since mid-2021 after I had an existential crisis. I’m a very right and left-brain person, and those two sides seem to duel it out on a regular basis. You never know what you’re going to get sometimes.
I write on many topics, including climate change, sustainability, nature, sex, relationships, men’s issues, parenting, investing, philosophy, photography, machine learning, data science, and startups.
Lately, I’ve rekindled my love for nature writing and adventure. I write about climate change, sustainability, nature, and the dying world at my biggest publication, Weathered.
I also started a publication called Neural Market Trends. It’s the Medium version of my long-running blog with the same name. It’s meant to be an extension of my technology side of life. Stop by and follow it!
Elsewhere in Medium, I’ve published to Sensual: An Erotic Life, Data Driven Investor, The Bad Influence, Illumination, and Pollinate.
Who is Tom?
I’m a father to two awesome kids, a partner of 17 years to a wonderful woman, live in the woods, and have an incredible career. I work in the startup world as a solutions engineer/sales engineer. I code, make presentations, and traveled quite often (pre-COVID).
Half of me is an introvert that loves good books, a glass of wine, and a roaring fire, and the other half is an extrovert that thrives on getting up in front of people and translating complex subjects into easy-to-understand ones.
Why write?
That’s a good question. I’ve been writing since I was a teenager, sometimes poetry, sometimes short stories, and occasionally technical reports. Writing got me into the Startup world and now that I’m 50+ years of age I feel an existential dread to accelerate sharing what’s in my head with you all. I feel like I’m excising the poison from my body by doing this as much as possible.
I write mostly in the mornings, I get up between 5 AM and 6 AM, make a strong coffee, and warm up the laptop. I aim to spend the next half of my life writing as much as possible.
Thank you so much for being along for this ride, I hope to make it a fun one.
