Utopia For You

Not for me

It’s been 10 years since he came to this rock. This dusty, oxygen-starved space rock, hurtling around some alphanumeric labeled star. It was supposed to be the new #utopia, the one where like-minded people could live out their lives in harmony.

Now he was standing outside, fidgeting in his space suit and looking at pressurized glass dome city. 12 years ago he boarded a rocket with his wife to come here and raise a family. They spent 2 years in cryogenic sleep, next to each other, and woke up right before they entered the atmosphere of New Earth.

They had an apartment reserved and new jobs waiting, and they were good members of the Church. They couldn’t wait to start their lives over again and be with their kind, Space-Christians, pious, and hard workers for the Church.

She met Willhelm at Bible Study one Sunday and had an affair with him. They argued and John was thrown out of their apartment. Willhelm moved in a few days later. John spiraled into a depression soon after and lost his job.

This was not the life he had imagined, not for himself at least.

“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath.
