We (men) are bombarded with this 'provider' mentality from birth. Its what I saw with my parents. My father would work all the time and then leave money in the cabinet for my mother to use for shopping. It was called "wirtschaftsgeld."

I grew up in a very divided labor family with heavy religious constraints, because that how they were brought up.

Religion is a huge enabler of toxic masculinity because IMHO modern day organized religion is such a raw deal for women. As a cult survivor (https://medium.com/illumination/im-a-cult-survivor-9d435aa7c84a), I saw first hand how religion tightens the thumb screws on any behavior they see as unfit for women and enable men to dominate them.
